Many symptoms can be attributed to the vestibular system, such as: Vertigo or spinning, motion triggered dizziness, feeling off-balance, and lightheadedness. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo View BPPV Brochure
This condition occurs when crystals from one part of the inner ear get dislodged into another part of the ear, (View Animation) causing a false sense of spinning, except that it feels very real to the patient. Generally the vertigo last several seconds to a minute, though it can make you very nauseous, dizzy and off balance for a period of time afterwards. It is easily assessed and treated with an Epley Maneuver (View Animation) in the office on the same day as your initial exam.

A virus can attach the nerve cells that provide your body and brain with information on balance. It causes a bout of vertigo that can persist for several hours to several days. After it passes you may have residual dizziness with movement, vertigo or disequilibrium. Exercises that are specifically designed to stimulate recovery of the vestibular senses, and stimulate their relationship with the eyes and sensors of the feet, are helpful in facilitating recovery.

Cervical Vertigo
Often times, moving your head causes symptoms of the above conditions, so people avoid neck movements and this can lead to a stiff neck. Manual therapy and vestibular exercises are helpful in recovery.

Peripheral Neuropathy
Loss of feeling in the feet can lead to less information to the brain to help you maintain your balance. Specific exercises are designed to help make the vestibular and visual senses heighten their work load to make up for the sensory loss.

Disequilibrium of Aging
As we age, our senses all start to lose their sharpness, therefore we need to utilize other strategies to compensate for this loss. Maintaining strength and flexibility as well as propriception will help. We can teach you exercises that are the best for your system, that you may do daily at home to reduce these symptoms and reduce your risk for falls.

A thorough Vestibular, neurological and balance assessment will be provided at your initial visit that will allow us to develop a plan to get you functioning at your optimal level. Patients often hear from their doctors that vestibular treatment will make them worse before it gets better and they are then fearful of coming for care. We do need to evaluate your symptoms, but we will do everything we can in a controlled manner to keep you as comfortable as possible.
